Sample Itinerary: Nicaragua Volcanoes and Cloud Forests
Adventure Awaits on Your Nicaragua Vacation
Day 1: Your day starts with a guided transfer from Managua city to Colonial Leon. Check in and rest of the afternoon at leisure. – Overnight in Leon.
Day 2 (B): After Breakfast, your private transfer will take you to the bottom of Cerro Negro (Black Hill). Rising out of the green trees the black walls of Cerro Negro create a bizarre contrast with the surroundings. You will hike first on trails and black dunes formed by former lava. As you reach the foot of the volcano you begin an easy climb up to the first of two active and colorful craters. Along with your guide, follow the edge of the crater to get to the second crater and highest point of the volcano. Enjoy the views over the volcano range, the plains and highlands of Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean. – Overnight in Leon.
Day 3 (B): After breakfast, transfer to Granada with a stop to the Masaya Volcano. The transportation will stop at the observation point of the crater edge and from there you can choose to make an easy or moderate trek with your guide. Arrival to Granada city and rest of the day at leisure. – Overnight in Granada.
Day 4 (B & L): Today you take a 4WD drive to the slopes of the Mombacho volcano “The Puma Trail” where the “Cutirre” coffee farm is located at the Mombacho volcano Natural Reserve. This enormous cloud forest is full of luxurious vegetation which has managed to grow over centuries since the last volcanic activity. The adventure begins on a paved road and right from the start you will be surprised by the biodiversity of this nature reserve and enjoy the breathtaking views. When you reach the summit, you will understand why this ecosystem is a cloud forest. After lunch you will return to Colonial Granada. Rest of the day on your own. – Overnight in Granada.
Day 5 (B): Escorted Transfer to San Jorge’s port, located at Rivas. Upon arrival at San Jorge , you will board a one hour ride ferry that will take you to the heart of Ometepelt (Ometepe). A local guide will be waiting to transfer you approximately 30 minutes to your hotel, located at “Playa Santo Domingo” Beach. From the moment you arrive to Ometepe you realize that you are in a different world, unique in its kind. The presence of the Volcanoes is constant, as life circles around these two giants of nature. The Concepcion is a dormant volcano and the Maderas is extinct volcano covered by a deep cloud forest and a lagoon on the top of the crater. The Island was a ceremonial place for ancient Indian culture; petroglyphs and stone idols are found in different archaeological sites around the island.
Overnight at Ometepe Island.
Day 6 (B & L): Breakfast at hotel followed by a full day tour to Ometepe Island. – Overnight at Ometepe Island.
Day 7 (B): Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the Moyogalpa Port in order to take the ferry ride to San Jorge Port where a representative will meet you to transfer you to Managua City for your departure flight home. (B)
